The electric bike is an increasingly popular choice among couriers and people looking for a convenient, eco-friendly means of urban transportation. However, there are many myths surrounding the legality of electric bikes, especially regarding fines. In this article, we explain the current regulations for electric bikes, when you risk a fine for using one, and why renting an electric bike is a great option for couriers.

Electric bike regulations in Poland
According to Polish law, an electric bike is a vehicle that meets specific technical requirements. The most important electric bike regulations state that:
- The maximum motor power cannot exceed 250 W,
- Electric assistance works only while pedaling,
- The maximum assisted speed is 25 km/h,
- The bike cannot be equipped with a throttle (acceleration button),
- The battery cannot have a power above 2 V.
If the electric bike meets the above conditions, you can legally ride it on bike paths and public roads, and no additional licenses, insurance, or helmet are required.

Electric bike fines – when can you get penalized?
Recently, there has been much information about fines for couriers using electric bikes. It’s important to know that a fine is only issued if the vehicle exceeds permissible parameters and is classified as an S-pedelec or moped. In such a case:
- A fine for riding without a license is at least 1,500 PLN,
- Lack of mandatory insurance is a penalty of up to 1,200 PLN,
- Riding without a helmet – 100 PLN,
- Riding an S-pedelec on bike paths is a 100 PLN fine.
You won’t find such vehicles in our Avalon Logistics Group fleet – all our electric bikes are fully legal and compliant.

How is an electric bike different from a moped or S-pedelec?
Many users confuse electric bikes with mopeds or S-pedelecs. This is a very important distinction:

- Electric bike – assists only while pedaling, does not exceed 25 km/h and 250 W motor power. No license, insurance, or helmet required.
- S-pedelec – a fast electric bike that can reach up to 45 km/h, with power above 250 W. In Poland, it is treated as a moped, meaning the need for a license, registration, insurance, helmet, and a ban on riding on bike paths.
- Moped – a vehicle with a combustion or electric engine, reaching higher speeds and requiring registration and a license.
At Avalon Logistics Group, we offer only electric bikes that meet all legal requirements – you can use them without fear of fines or other consequences.
