Uber is gaining more and more supporters year by year. Poles eagerly use the application and praise the quick and affordable rides. According to a report by IPSOS commissioned by Uber, over 60% of residents in cities where the application operates have used it at least once in their lives, and a whopping 69% admit that when planning a ride, they first think of Uber. This is evidence that the company has firmly established its position in the market and has become ingrained in the awareness of Poles.
In the last 5 years, nearly 4.5 million people have used Uber’s services. Passengers appreciate the convenience of quickly ordering rides through the app and the transparency of pre-set prices. But let’s go back to the beginning. What is Uber, and how does it actually work?
What is Uber?
Uber is a modern platform that has revolutionized the transportation services market. Its main goal is to connect drivers and passengers through a mobile application. People in need of transportation can order a driver closest to their location and quickly get to their destination. In the vast majority of cases (up to 80%), the driver arrives at the passenger’s location in less than 5 minutes!
Uber leads among ride-hailing apps, helping millions of passengers move comfortably and quickly through major cities every day. This allows residents to be fully mobile without the need for their own car.
How does Uber work from the passenger’s perspective?
Using Uber is simple and intuitive. All you need is a smartphone with internet access. First, download the mobile app and create an account using your email address and phone number. When you need a ride, simply indicate your destination in the app, confirm the pickup location, and click “Confirm” to find a driver.
Your request is then sent to an Uber-affiliated driver closest to your location. You can track their location on the map. Once the driver accepts the request, you’ll be notified. The app provides you with an estimated arrival time, a photo of the driver, and detailed information about the vehicle for easy identification.

What does the ride process look like from the driver’s point of view? Accept a ride request in the mobile app and go to the passenger. Pick them up at the agreed-upon location and drive them to their destination. Ensure the car is clean, and the journey is pleasant. When you arrive, the ride is considered completed. The fare is automatically collected from the passenger – payment can be made with a credit card, Android Pay, PayPal, or cash (depending on the passenger’s chosen payment method). Both the driver and the passenger can rate each other on a scale of 1 to 5 stars at the end of the trip, and these ratings are anonymous.
Safety is a priority
Uber places a high value on passenger safety. They screen their drivers, provide insurance, and offer features in the app that allow users to track the vehicle and stay in touch with the driver. Anyone wanting to work as an Uber driver must provide a valid driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance, and a certificate of no criminal record. Since 2020 in Poland, having a taxi license is also mandatory. You can learn how to obtain a taxi license for your car in the article How to obtain a taxi license for your car??
Need assistance during a ride? To get support in an emergency, use the special button or share ride information with a trusted person. Driver safety is just as important as passenger safety. If you need help, you can contact a trained support team through the app 24/7. Do it immediately if you have any concerns about your safety.
Uber is not just about rides
If you ask a random person what Uber is, you’ll likely hear: “An app for ordering rides.” However, Uber is not only about transporting people from point A to point B. The company also offers the convenience of ordering affordable meals, facilitates access to healthcare, and creates new solutions for transportation bookings.
