Riding at 5.o: Car First Aid Kit

Is it mandatory and what changes will the new regulations bring? What must it include according to the current regulations?

Are you interested?

A car first aid kit is one of those pieces of equipment that we usually only remember when it’s truly needed. And although today many drivers carry one in their car on their own initiative, the law still distinguishes between what’s recommended and what’s mandatory.

However, this is a good time to update your knowledge. In 2026, a first aid kit will still not be mandatory in every private passenger car, but planned changes in the regulations could change that as soon as 2027.

Is a first aid kit mandatory in the car in 2026?

As of now, the answer is: no, not in every private car. In Poland, the mandatory equipment for a standard passenger vehicle includes primarily a warning triangle and a fire extinguisher, while a first aid kit is not yet on the mandatory list for all drivers.

There are, however, exceptions. A first aid kit is required in certain vehicles used professionally or for passenger transport.

In which vehicles is a first aid kit already mandatory?

The obligation applies, among others, to such vehicles as:

  • taxis,
  • buses,
  • driving school cars,
  • trucks adapted for transporting people.

For private drivers, this does not mean the subject can be completely ignored. In an emergency, the first few minutes count, and a well-equipped first aid kit can genuinely help provide first aid until services arrive.

New regulations for car first aid kits from 2027

The most important change is that the Ministry of Infrastructure is working on regulations that will introduce the obligation to carry a first aid kit in passenger cars as well. According to current plans, the new regulations are to come into force in Q2 2027.

However, this does not mean that it will be a change for all drivers at once. The draft assumes it will apply to passenger cars registered for the first time after 31 March 2027.

Who will be affected by the planned regulations?

If the new regulations are implemented in their current form, the situation will be as follows:

Type of vehicleWill a first aid kit be mandatory?
Private passenger car used in 2026No
Passenger car registered for the first time up to 31 March 2027No
Passenger car registered for the first time from 1 April 2027Yes
Taxi, bus, driving school carYes

This means that many drivers will not feel this change directly for quite some time. Nevertheless, it’s already worth preparing yourself for the new rules, especially if you plan on buying a new car or run a business related to passenger transport.

What should a car first aid kit contain?

Although the regulations still don’t indicate a single, strict list of contents for private passenger cars, it’s best to follow proven safety standards. A well-equipped car first aid kit should contain:

  • disposable gloves,
  • a mask or resuscitation mouthpiece,
  • bandages and elastic wraps,
  • sterile gauze and compresses,
  • plasters with and without dressings,
  • rescue scissors,
  • NRC thermal blanket,
  • triangular bandages,
  • disinfectant,
  • first aid instructions.

Such a set works well for both minor injuries and as a first response after a more serious road incident. It is also important to remember that simply having a first aid kit is not enough if its contents are incomplete or expired.

How to take care of a car first aid kit?

A good first aid kit is not just about what’s inside, but also its condition and accessibility. If it is to help in a critical situation, it must be easy to find and ready to use.

It’s worth remembering a few simple rules:

  • regularly check the expiration dates of items,
  • replenish missing items after every use,
  • keep the kit in a place that is easy to reach,
  • don’t throw it at the very bottom of the trunk under heavy things,
  • choose good quality ready-made kits, preferably compliant with European standards.

It’s also a good idea before a trip to check exactly where the first aid kit is located in a company or rental car. This small detail can streamline your actions in a stressful situation.

Most common driver mistakes

  • No first aid kit even when driving professionally (e.g. taxi)
  • Expired dressings
  • Incomplete kit (missing gloves or mask)
  • Storing the first aid kit in a hard-to-reach place

By avoiding these mistakes, you increase your safety and readiness to act.

Why is it worth having a first aid kit even if it’s not required?

The lack of a legal requirement doesn’t change one thing: the driver is often the first person at the scene of a collision or accident. In those moments, a quick response, securing a wound, protecting the victim from hypothermia, or being able to provide safe first aid is what counts.

For this reason, a car first aid kit should not be treated solely as a legal requirement. It is simply a part of responsible car equipment, which may turn out useful much sooner than an official obligation appears.

Summary – better to have than not have

A car first aid kit in 2026 is still not mandatory in every private vehicle, but the planned regulations clearly indicate that this situation will not last forever. If the new laws come into force as currently proposed, as of April 1, 2027, the requirement will apply to newly registered passenger cars.

That’s why it’s worth treating the first aid kit not just as a requirement, but as a practical element of safety. Check the equipment in your car today and make sure you have everything you might truly need within reach.

If you’re a driver for Bolt or Uber, you don’t have to waste time assembling medical supplies yourself. By choosing taxi car rental from a reliable fleet partner, you get a fully equipped, safe vehicle with a ready-to-use first aid kit onboard. Your only task is to find out exactly where it is—check before your shift starts and hit the road with complete peace of mind.

Take care of your safety today—check your first aid kit or equip your car with a new, complete version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a first aid kit mandatory in a passenger car in 2026?

In standard private cars, regulations still don’t impose an absolute requirement to have a first aid kit on board. However, it’s always worth carrying one for your own safety. The obligation does apply to selected vehicles, such as taxis, buses, or driving school cars. Remember, when providing first aid, appropriate equipment is simply indispensable.

As a taxi driver (Bolt, Uber), do I have to have a first aid kit?

Yes, the regulations on this matter are very clear. Vehicles used for passenger transport for profit, including all taxis, must be equipped with an emergency first aid kit. Not having a first aid kit during a police check usually results in an unnecessary fine.

From when might a first aid kit also be mandatory in passenger cars?

The planned regulations are set to come into force in the second quarter of 2027. According to current proposals, they will apply to passenger cars registered for the first time after April 1, 2027.

Will the new regulations cover used cars?

According to current plans, no. The changes are intended to apply to new passenger cars registered after the specified date.

What should a well-equipped car first aid kit contain?

It’s best to choose a ready-made set compliant with the European DIN 13164 standard. Such a kit should contain, among other things, disposable gloves, a set of plasters and bandages, elastic bandages, trauma shears, and a thermal blanket (NRC foil). It’s also always worth adding a resuscitation mouthpiece.

Where is the best place to keep a first aid kit in the car?

The first aid kit must be in a place where you can access it quickly and easily in the event of an accident. It’s best to keep it in a side compartment in the trunk, under the passenger seat, or in the glove compartment. Avoid tossing it at the very bottom of the trunk, where it could get crushed by heavy suitcases.

Who takes care of the first aid kit if I rent a taxi car from a fleet partner?

When you choose rental from a professional fleet partner, such as Avalon Logistics, you receive a car fully prepared for the job. The car already comes fully equipped with all legally required elements, including the first aid kit. Your only task is to make sure, before starting your shift, where exactly the kit is located.
