If you are a taxi driver, read about the requirements that apply to you.

A car camera in a taxi can increase the sense of security for both the driver and passengers. It comes in handy after a collision, during a dispute about the route of the trip, or in the event of vehicle damage in a city parking lot. However, it is important to remember that recording a customer involves processing personal data. For this reason, a dashcam in a taxi should be used sensibly and in accordance with RODO regulations.

Is a camera in a taxi legal?

Installing a camera in a car is not prohibited. A dashcam can record the road, the area around the vehicle, and in some cases, also the interior of the car. For a taxi driver, this is often a practical safeguard in case of dangerous situations, minor accidents, or false accusations.

However, in a taxi this is not just simple, private recording. The driver is providing a service, and the passenger may be captured on the video footage. A visible face, voice, travel route, or the time of the ride may allow identification of a specific person.

This is why vehicle monitoring should have a clearly defined purpose. Most often, it is the protection of people and property, increasing safety during the ride, and the ability to determine the course of a road incident.

RODO and recording passengers

RODO does not mean that cameras are forbidden in taxis. However, it does mean that business owners should use them responsibly. It is not enough to install the device and then forget about it.

The most important rule is data minimization. In practice, it is best to record only what truly helps ensure safety. A camera pointed at the road is generally less intrusive to privacy than a device that constantly records the interior of the vehicle and every passenger conversation.

A good solution is loop recording. Older footage is then automatically overwritten, and the recording is only preserved if a collision, sudden braking, or another unusual situation occurs. A dashcam working in this way limits the amount of data stored.

Inform your customer about the camera

The passenger should know that the vehicle is being monitored. This information must be visible before the trip begins or at the latest upon entering the car. The simplest solution is a clear sticker with a camera symbol and a short message.

It is worth ensuring that such information indicates:

  • who is responsible for the recordings
  • why monitoring is used
  • how long the footage is stored
  • where the customer can obtain more information
  • what rights the recorded person has

Full information can be made available on the company’s website, in the service regulations, or via a QR code placed in the car. This way, the customer knows that the recording is not a hidden part of the trip.

Can you record audio?

Recording video and recording conversations are two different things. Audio much more significantly impacts the passenger’s privacy, so it is best to disable its recording unless it is truly necessary.

Conversations in a taxi may concern private matters, health, work, or family. The dashcam should not collect such information just because the device has a built-in microphone. A safer option is a dashcam recording video only, without sound.

Recording is not material for the internet

Camera footage can serve as evidence after a collision, conflict with a passenger, or vehicle damage. However, this does not grant the right to publish recordings on social media. A video showing the customer’s face, voice, or the license plates of other cars can violate privacy.

If an incident occurs, the recording should be secured and handed over only to entities authorized to receive it, such as the police, an insurance company, or a court. Uploading the video to the internet “as a warning” is a risky idea.

City Parking vs. Car Surveillance

Car surveillance is also useful when a taxi is parked in a city lot. Parking mode can record a bumper hit, paint scratch, or an attempt to damage the vehicle. Such footage can be helpful when reporting a claim.

Even in a city parking lot, however, the camera should not be used to constantly monitor passersby. Its purpose is to secure the vehicle and collect evidence in the event of a specific incident. It is worth storing recordings only briefly and deleting them when they are no longer needed.

How to use a dashcam in a taxi?

AreaGood practice
Purpose of recordingProtecting the driver, passengers, and vehicle
Scope of imageRecording only the necessary area
SoundDisabled unless necessary
StorageShort-term, with automatic overwriting
SharingOnly with police, insurer, or court
Online publicationAvoid publishing material with clients

A dashcam in a taxi can be a legal and practical support, but it requires a responsible approach. Inform passengers about recording; make sure of it, especially if you are an Avalon Logistics driver. Select the proper settings and secure access to the files. This way, dashcams will increase the safety of your rides without unnecessarily infringing on your customers’ privacy.
